  • Day 10: See y'all next week!

    I have been procrastinating writing this blog post for a few days. I started writing it on Friday, but then I could not get myself to finish it because I knew it was the last one. It’s like when I watch a captivating show that only has one season--when I get to the second to last episode, I delay watching it as much as possible. For some of those shows, it has been months, and I still have not watched the last episode, just because I don’t want it to “end.” It won’t be the case for this, though, so here I go.

  • Day 9: One, Two, Three... DREAM BIG!

    Leiva and I entered the room with Raymond, our guest speaker, and Jackie, his girlfriend. Right away, the kids stopped everything they were doing and started staring at him. “Wow, are you a football player?” Caleb asked, as he gave a once over to Raymond. Amaya yelled, “Balla, is he your brother? Y’all kinda look alike!” I let the kids express their excitement with questions for about a minute, and then I asked them to sit down and pay attention.

  • Day 8: Spiderman's amygdala

    “We are going to start with a very challenging exercise today--for sixty seconds, you will remain comfortably seated, free your hands, and simply remain silent. After we are done, I am going to explain the reason behind the exercise.” My request was immediately met with a slew of questions and comments--”Like, a WHOLE minute?” asked Sean; “what if somebody starts talking?” continued Launy; “Of course we can do this,” added, Amaya, “but what’s the reason for doing this?” “He JUST said, it!!” Responded Prodigy, and I continued to watch them until they eventually got quiet.

  • Day 7: Vegetarians eat grass!

    From outside the room, it seemed there was a live acapella concert in CAMP 4 Justice. Entering the room only confirmed this--all the kids were around a table, drumming, laughing, and freestyling. They were actually coming up with rhymes on the spot, covering topics limited to food, fun, dancing, and as we entered, FitLit. I could not resist, so I joined them. While I was drumming on the table with them, “Balla” worked its way into their rhymes, and this went on for about forty more seconds until it stopped. We all burst into laughter, and right there, a silent agreement was made between all of us--yesterday was forgotten, and we were ready to work.

  • Day 6: Today was a Monday

    I gotta say, today was a Monday! The kids were excited to see us, and many gave us hugs. Launy ran to Leiva to hug her, and Joshua ran to me. We asked them if anything amazing had happened during the weekend, and Launy proceeded to tell us about a historic site she visited in the Everglades. Fabian told us how much he had enjoyed Disneyland, and every other kid in the room wanted to share something. As soon as we transitioned into reading, though, I started seeing facial expressions that took me back to my classroom during the school year. Fabian was staring at me, but he could obviously not see me.
